Jamie Carragher urges Liverpool to make a move for 'frightening' Anthony Gordon

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to revive their interest in Anthony Gordon, stating that the talented English winger could bring a dynamic and intimidating element to Arne Slot's offensive lineup.

Liverpool are yet to make any additions to their first-team squad since Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp as head coach back in May, with the new Premier League season just three days away.

But the Merseyside giants are working behind the scenes to strengthen before the transfer deadline and had appeared on the verge of signing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

However, widespread reports suggest Zubimendi has turned down a switch to Anfield to remain with Sociedad for the forthcoming campaign and it appears the Reds must explore other avenues for reinforcements.

Earlier this summer, Liverpool were credited with a strong interest in Newcastle forward Gordon, with the club keen to find a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, who is out of contract in 12 months’ time.

A potential swap deal involving Gordon and Joe Gomez was mooted as a possible option for Liverpool but these rumours have cooled in recent weeks.

‘That was a transfer that I would like to have seen go through,’ ex-Liverpool defender Carragher told Blood Red: Liverpool FC.

‘If there was still something in that between now and the end of the window, that’s something I would be really interested in us doing.

‘Whether that’s just Anthony Gordon or that’s Joe Gomez being involved, because I think Joe is probably at that stage now where he probably wants first-team football.

‘I’m not sure he will ever get that at Liverpool.’

Carragher would welcome a move for Gordon as he feels Liverpool are lacking ‘blistering’ speed in their attacking ranks.

‘I think the reason why Anthony Gordon’s name has probably come up and why Liverpool are interested is that I think there’s only Nunez in the attack now who has blistering pace,’ he added.

‘Salah’s obviously not as quick as he was, of course he’s not, and I don’t think Diaz has got that pace. I go back to [Sadio] Mane…

‘I think Anthony Gordon’s pace is frightening, I do. You know when you’re watching a game on TV and you go, “Wow!”, and you just see someone leave a full-back.

‘That’s what I think he could add if that was the case, if he was to come in and maybe Liverpool were interested.

‘I think it’s that pace, Mane’s pace basically. I do think we lack that in the attack.’

On the prospect of Gordon scoring against Everton at Goodison Park, Carragher replied: ‘I would love it!’

While Liverpool are still yet to get bring in any new signings, Carragher is ‘not worried at all’ and has ‘great belief’ that the right decisions are being made by those in charge.

‘I’ve got no criticism at all of the football operations. Listen, everyone has been crying to get Michael Edwards and his team back,’ the former England centre-back continued.

‘Michael is in a slightly different role now and they’ve obviously got Richard Hughes in there but they’ve obviously got a great relationship.

‘Any deal that’s going on at Liverpool, in or out, I’m sure Michael Edwards is all over it as well and getting Richard Hughes accustomed to the club and how things work.

‘I’m not worried at all and I always have great belief in what we do behind the scenes, with the ownership and the football operations, that we’re very clinical.

‘You only have to see that with the deal done with Carvalho, which is a great deal for us in terms of him going out and the money that we’ve brought in.’
