New Delhi: IPL 2025 will witness a mega auction as numerous players gear up to switch teams. Franchisees will need to strategically utilize retention and right-to-match options to secure their key players for the upcoming season. The IPL Governing Council revealed the rules for the auction on Saturday, setting the stage for an exciting player transfer window.
Teams will be able to retain 6 players:
According to the BCCI Governing Council, a franchise can retain a maximum of six players through retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) card option.

1st retention – 18cr.
2nd Retention – 14cr.
3rd Retention – 11cr.
4th Retention – 18cr.
5th Retention – 14cr.

The decided date:
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI has given time till 31 October 2024 for all the 10 franchises to announce their list of retained players ahead of the mega auction. Within this deadline, all the franchises have to name all their retained players.

What will be the rules of retention:
Under the new retention guidelines issued by BCCI, IPL franchises can retain a total of 6 players from their existing team. If the team does not retain these 6 players, then it can use the Right to Match. This combination is at the discretion of the IPL franchise. However, these 6 players can be any foreign or Indian cricketer.
