After the first Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, both teams were penalized for slow over rates in the World Test Championship. Pakistan lost six WTC points, while Bangladesh, despite securing their first Test win against Pakistan, were docked three points. The ICC stated, "Pakistan was six overs short during the Test match, resulting in the loss of six World Test Championship points. Bangladesh, on the other hand, were found to be three overs short and were docked three points."
As a result, Pakistan remained eighth in the WTC 2023-25 table despite the penalty and the loss. Winners Bangladesh dropped to seventh behind South Africa because of the sanction. The two teams will next face in the second Test match starting at the same venue on August 20.
“Pakistan were fined 30% of their match fee while Bangladesh were penalised 15%. Captains Shan Masood and Najmul Hossain Shanto pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the proposed sanctions, so there was no need for formal hearings,” ICC added further.
On Sunday, Bangladesh shrugged off political unrest back home to notch a historic 10-wicket win after Pakistan collapsed to 146 all out on a dramatic final day of the first Test. Off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz and left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan shared seven wickets after the pace bowlers mopped up the top order to give Bangladesh its maiden win in 14 Test matches against Pakistan.
It was Bangladesh’s seventh away Test win and the first since beating New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in January 2022.
