This is a record that may stand for a long time, if not forever. Kevin Durant (5) and James Harden (4) are among the active players who have achieved this feat multiple times, but they are still far from reaching MJ's total. Michael Jordan won the scoring title in his third NBA season and held onto it for the next six seasons without being dethroned. Even in his final season with the Bulls (1996-98), Jordan managed to secure the scoring title, showcasing his enduring greatness. His most remarkable season was in 1990 when he averaged an incredible 33.6 points per game.
Wilt the Stilt came firing out of the gate when he won MVP, Rookie of the Year and the scoring title in his debut season. Chamberlain proceeded to become one of the most dominant scorers in league history and added scoring titles to his list of accolades in each of his first six seasons. His highest-scoring season is also the highest-scoring season in league history as Chamberlain averaged 50.4 points per game. He added one more scoring title in 1966.
KD has the most NBA scoring titles among active players. The Durantula has been a scoring machine since his rookie season at age 19 and if not for injury issues later on into his career, it’s possible Durant would have more scoring titles at this stage. Durant won three consecutive scoring titles from 2010 to 2012 and added another in 2014 while with the Thunder. He is still scoring at an elite clip entering his 17th season after putting up 27.1 points per game in the 2023-24 season.
The Iceman himself is next on the list with four scoring titles during his legendary playing career. Gervin helped make the Spurs’ transition from the ABA to the NBA a smooth one as he won the scoring title in the San Antonio’s second NBA season. That marked the first of three consecutive scoring titles for Gervin, who then added another in the 1982 season. Gervin had several notable scoring outbursts including a 63-point game against the New Orleans Jazz in 1978.
Kobe was a tenacious competitor who could score the ball at will whether he was pulling up from three or attacking the basket and going over a 7-footer for a slam dunk. The Black Mamba was an 18-time All-Star during his legendary 20-year career. He led the league in points scored in four of those seasons, topping out at 35.6 points per game in the 2006 season. Bryant is the closest player to ever challenge Will Chamberlain’s single-game scoring record from when he torched the Raptors for 81 points in that season. Bryant’s legacy as a fierce competitor and terrific scorer still echoes through the game.
The Beard is one of the most accomplished active players in the league with 10 All-Stars, four scoring titles and an MVP to his credit heading into Year 16. Harden has a 61-point game under his belt and three seasons in which he averaged over 30 points per game. He is one of the great shooters in an era where 3-point shooting has become more and more integral to offenses around the league. His 378 made 3s in 2019 is the second-most ever in a season behind only Steph Curry’s 402 in 2016.
